Led Zep: We'll rock again in NY ??

The three kings of rock ... Led Zeppelin

LED ZEPPELIN celebrated their triumphant comeback gig by planning world
domination over cups of tea and coffee.
Unlike in their hellraising heyday, singer ROBERT PLANT and guitarist JIMMY
PAGE
slapped each other on the back and were handed giant mugs of hot
drinks.
But then the rock fighting talk began and they discussed returning to Madison
Square Garden in New York - where they did three sell-out shows in 1973.
My source backstage at London’s O2 arena said: “Robert had a couple of bottles
of beer before going on stage but afterwards it was just hot mugs of tea and
coffee.
“The band were really fired up and were talking about their late drummer JOHN
BONHAM
and what he would have thought about it - it was a time for
reflection.
“Then the talk went to, ‘What next? Was this it or would there be something
else?’ One of the guys started talking about their three concerts at the
Garden.
There was a consensus of, ‘Why not?’ It is one of the best live music venues
in the world. I have no doubt after their reaction backstage that they will
be there next year playing to a sell-out crowd.”

Apple Making Deals for Web Video Rentals

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple’s
sputtering efforts to be a major purveyor of video downloads may get a
boost in 2008 from an agreement with 20th Century Fox for digital movie
rentals.

Apple has been trying to interest a number of
Hollywood studios in an iTunes rental service, and several people
familiar with the negotiations said that more than one studio would
appear onstage at the company’s MacWorld exhibition here
beginning Jan. 14 to endorse a new Apple movie rental service.

These
people, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the
negotiations, confirmed the Apple-Fox relationship. Apple now trails
several companies offering digital movie rental services, including Amazon and Movielink.

The
Financial Times first reported the movie rental agreement on Thursday.
Apple and Fox executives declined to comment. The Fox studio is a unit
of the News Corporation.

Mets Complete Collapse, Phillies Take NL East

After blowing a big September lead in the NL East, the New York Mets missed the playoffs Sunday when Tom Glavine was tagged for seven runs during the first inning of an 8-1 loss to the Florida Marlins in the regular-season finale.

New York's loss coupled with Philadelphia's 6-1 win over Washington gave the division title to the Phillies and sent the stunned Mets home for the winter wondering how they squandered a seven-game cushion over the final 18 days of an excruciating season.

Now, David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Pedro Martinez and the rest of this talented team will forever be remembered alongside the 1964 Phillies and other famous failures for skidding to one of baseball's most monumental collapses.

No major league team had owned a lead of seven games or more with 17 to play, or been up by at least seven on Sept. 12 or later, and failed to finish in first place

New Bike Lane Uses Parked Cars as Barrier

Bicycles and cars are grudging partners on Manhattan's congested streets, dodging and sometimes cursing each other as they share the road. But soon they won't have to, at least for a few blocks.

The city plans to experiment with a heavily buffered bike lane in one part of the Chelsea neighborhood, City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said. Bicycles will be separated from auto traffic by both a strip of pavement and a lane of parked cars.

The design, which has been tried in Europe, will be installed within the next month on Ninth Avenue between West 16th and West 23rd streets, Sadik-Khan said.

``It represents the kinds of innovative ideas that we can explore to make the streets more livable,'' she said.

The project will condense cars from four lanes to three, but Sadik-Khan said traffic in the area was light enough that the change wouldn't be a problem.

'Ninja Burglar' Strikes Again

Sources tell 1010 WINS the most wanted man on Staten Island broke into a Todt Hill home on Flagg Place Thursday night. But he didn't stick around very long. The homeowners, a dentist and his wife, scared him off. The hooded thief became known as the "Ninja Burglar" after more than a dozen North Shore break-ins. Residents are so on edge, our Glenn Schuck says one man answered the door Saturday morning holding a baseball bat.

The hooded thief is suspected in more than a dozen burglaries on Staten Island since last Spring.

In one incident earlier this month, a man claimed he stabbed the burglar after confronting him in his Donagan Hills home.

Anyone with information about the 'Ninja Burglar' is urged to call the NYPD's CrimeStoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.

The World's Fastest Limo?

Now here's something very much out of the ordinary. This unique black Ferrari 360 Modena carbon fibre stretch limousine will undoubtedly spin heads when it's unveiled at the European Limousine and Chauffeur Show in the UK this month. The fastest limo in the world according to owner Dan Cawley, the 23 feet long, 400bhp vehicle achieves 0-60mph in less than six seconds and has a top speed of 170mph.

Dan, of Style Limousines in Manchester, commissioned Carbonyte UK to build this outlandish vehicle spending over £200,000 on the modifications. Foregoing the mini bars found in other limos, the Ferrari has been equipped with an extra six seats and nine foot gull-wing doors so it can carry eight passengers in total.

Carbonyte UK is the pioneer of HotFusion Composite Manufacturing Technology that was used on the McLaren SLR Supercar.

NYC Taxi Drivers Sue to Stop Installation of GPS Units

MANHATTAN (AP) -- A group of cabbies sued city regulators Wednesday in an attempt to block a new requirement that all taxis be outfitted with global positioning systems and software that will record where they drive.

The move comes two weeks after thousands of cabbies went on strike for two days to protest the rule, which some have blasted as an invasion of privacy.

In the suit, the drivers argue that the city overstepped its authority and acted unconstitutionally when it mandated the units.

The suit also makes an unusual claim that the GPS devices will give away trade secrets by disclosing the cabbies' driving patterns.

Most hacks, it explained, cruise routes of their own design that they believe lead to the most lucrative fares. "Each taxi driver regards his or her own pattern as proprietary,'' the suit said. Tracking those patterns would cause the drivers to give up their competitive edge, the suit claimed.

Officials at New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission referred calls to the city's law department, which said it was reviewing the suit.

The GPS units are among several pieces of new technology being phased into cabs this year, including credit card machines, a text messaging system and television screens for passengers.

Taxi drivers and fleet owners are divided over the new equipment. Some have embraced it. Others have criticized it as costly and unnecessary.

A faction of drivers, led by the Taxi Workers Alliance, struck for two days last month to call attention to the dispute. The Alliance also organized the lawsuit, which was filed at a federal court in Manhattan.

The drivers are asking the court to block enforcement of the new technology requirements and reimburse drivers for the cost of installing any equipment already in place. It also seeks an injunction blocking the first round of enforcement of the rules.

Cabs that don't have the technology will start failing city inspections as of Oct. 1. Within the past few weeks, the city has also begun fining cab owners who haven't yet signed contracts to install the equipment. Owners have also been threatened with suspensions for failing to comply.

ASTORIA, I ADORE YA'

AFFORDABLE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY QUEENS AREA SEES ITS OWN CONDO BOOM

WITH numerous new developments and loft conversions - not to mention a slow but steady influx of new restaurants, bars and residents - Long Island City has generated the lion's share of buzz about Queens. But just north of that emerging district lies Astoria, an area that's long attracted a diverse mix of immigrants (Greeks, Italians, Arabs) and, in recent years, a steady stream of Manhattan rent refugees - young professionals drawn in by affordable prices, great restaurants and a quick commute to Midtown.

And now, a new trend is emerging in Astoria: shiny, new condo developments.

New construction is transforming this renter-friendly neighborhood into the city's latest, greatest 'hood for luxury residential buildings. Currently on the market are the Astoria Windsor at 30-80 21st St., with one-bedrooms with home offices starting at $530,000; the Ionian Condo, at 32-70 41st St., with three 923-square-foot one-bedrooms with balconies remaining for $516,544 and up; and Hoyt Terrace, at 25-47 23rd St., an eight-unit building with apartments starting at $259,000 for a 751-square-foot studio.

And many more are on the way. Developers are eyeing the formerly industrial buildings across from Socrates Sculpture Park and the area along the East River waterfront. TTW Realty is converting the former Sohmer & Co. Piano Factory - and, more recently, the home of the Adirondack Furniture Co. - to residences, while other projects (including a building designed by Karl Fischer) are in the works.

It all smacks of great things for the future. But with its busy commercial thoroughfares (Broadway, 30th Avenue, Steinway Street) packed with ethnic restaurants, supermarkets, fishmongers, green grocers and major retailers like the Gap and Victoria's Secret, Astoria already functions as a convenient, family-friendly neighborhood.

Unlike Long Island City's Hunters Point - where a hipster community is growing along Vernon Boulevard - Astoria is a sprawling, established area with a distinct personality of its own.

Bonds' No. 756 ball generates more than initial estimates

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds' record-breaking 756th home run
ball was auctioned Saturday for $752,467, well more than the
estimates by memorabilia experts.

Home run No. 755, the ball that tied the record, went for
$186,750, according to Sotheby's/SCP Auctions. Both final prices
included the winning bid plus a 20 percent buyer's fee, according
to the auction houses handling the sale.

Bonds broke Aaron's record of 755 with a shot into the
right-center field seats on Aug. 7 off of Washington Nationals
pitcher Mike Bacsik in San Francisco.

Matt Murphy, a 21-year-old student and construction supervisor
from New York, emerged from a scuffle with the record-breaking ball
after paying $100 for a $12 ticket during a layover on his way to
Australia from his hometown.

Yellow cabs celebrate 100 years

All hail the taxi: 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of the metered cab.

City officials yesterday marked the centennial by unveiling the
first yellow cab decorated with panels painted in floral patterns by
schoolchildren.

"What better way to celebrate the New York taxi's centennial than to
emphasize the creativity of our children and to display that creativity
for the enjoyment of millions of people every day," said Taxi and
Limousine Commission Chairman Matthew Daus.

It's the latest look for the iconic New York City yellow cab, which
originally was red. Businessman Harry Allen in 1907 assembled a small
fleet of 65 shiny red French Darracq cabs, equipped with meters, and an
industry was born.

Allen launched the business after becoming incensed when a hansom
cab driver charged him and a female companion what he saw as an
excessive amount of money - $5 - for a three-quarter-mile trip in
Manhattan, according to taxi historian Graham Hodges, author of "Taxi!
A Social History of the New York City Cabdriver."

"One hundred years of New York City wreaks many changes in our
lives," Hodges said yesterday. "The taxi driver and his cab are
enduring symbols of New York for tourists and denizens alike. Times may
change, but the hackmen, their virtues and their problems go on
forever."

Is a Third N.Y. Baseball Team Feasible?

Imagine a baseball playoff race involving the Yankees, the Mets, and another team anchored in northern New Jersey. The Mets or Yanks would battle with the third team, sort of like the Dodgers and Giants of the Golden Era of New York baseball a half-century ago. Those two teams played their last New York City home games exactly 50 years ago this month and then departed for California. One present-day owner thinks that it is time for baseball to rectify its mistake and get a third team in the area.

The National League abandoned New York and squelched any plans for the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates to take the Dodgers' and Giants' place. Indeed, the league had no plans to return to New York until plans for a rival league, the Continental League, were unveiled in the late 1950s. In October 1960, after there was some congressional pressure put on the separate entities of the American and National Leagues, the NL expanded into New York and Houston.

AirPort Extreme Base Station with Gigabit Ethernet

Apple has made fast even faster. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (4.5 mice), in its first incarnation, achieved unprecedented speeds for Wi-Fi network transfers, topping 90 Mbps of actual throughput in ideal circumstances. Even in less-than-perfect conditions, the Extreme—with a recently updated draft version of the 802.11n standard—beat its 802.11g predecessor.

Apple has refreshed its previous Base Station by upgrading Ethernet from 10/100 Mbps to 10/100/1000 Mbps, offering Gigabit Ethernet in parity with the speed found on almost the entire Mac lineup. The lack of Gigabit Ethernet was our biggest carp in our last review

NYC Health Officials: Rise in HIV Infections

NEW YORK (AP) -- Infection rates for AIDS rose over the past six years among gay men under 30. The New York city Health Department says new diagnoses of HIV among gay men under 30 increased by 33 percent during the past six years, from 374 in 2001 to 499 in 2006.

Gay males aged 13 to 19 also saw an increase in H-I-V rates: from 41 new cases six years ago to 87 in 2006.

The majority of new cases were among black and Latino gay men.

Every borough except Staten Island saw an increase in infection rates.

The health department did not offer explanations for why rates among young gay men under 30 or teens between the ages of 13 and 19 have increased.

NYC Cabbies' Group Plans Strike, Bloomberg Plays Down Threat

NEW YORK (AP) -- A group of New York City taxi drivers is threatening to go on strike Wednesday over new rules requiring all cabs to have GPS and touch-screen monitors that will let passengers pay by credit card.

Read: City's Taxi Strike Contingency Plan

While playing down the likelihood of widespread disruption, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans Tuesday to institute group rides to and from LaGuardia and Kennedy airports if cabbies strike. Currently, drivers are allowed to pick up only one fare at a time.

"Our expectation at the moment is that there will be very few, if any, taxi drivers striking tomorrow and the next day,'' Bloomberg said at a news conference. "I think cooler heads will prevail.''

The New York Taxi Workers Alliance is calling for drivers to go on strike for 48 hours beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday to protest a requirement that the city's more than 13,000 cabs have the high-tech equipment when they come up for inspection, starting Oct. 1. The alliance claims to represent about one-fifth of the Taxi & Limousine Commission's 44,000 licensed drivers.

Some cabbies fear the video systems could be used to track drivers' movements and that drivers would get stuck paying hefty fees for credit card processing.

Review: iMovie '08

With the release of iMovie ’08, Apple has redefined its consumer video program’s mission and methodology. With the popularity of broadband Internet access, and particularly the YouTube video sharing Web site, iMovie is now focused on helping people quickly and easily capture, view, organize, and edit movies all in one place, and then readily share them online in a variety of formats. It does this better, faster, and more easily than any other consumer-level application I’m aware of on any platform. Think of iMovie ’08 as iPhoto for video.

However, in repositioning iMovie ’08 so firmly as a consumer product, many of the program’s more advanced features have been lost, making it an inappropriate choice for prosumers and professionals, and upsetting many users of the prior version.

Man Jumps from Police Stationhouse Window

NEW YORK -- Police were searching Friday for a man who jumped out a third-floor stationhouse window to escape questioning about a deadly shooting.

The 27-year-old man had been handcuffed and the window closed, but he managed somehow to slip out the window onto an adjacent building Thursday afternoon and ran off, police said.

Police dashed out of the 103rd Precinct station in Queens and charged up a fire escape to the roof to look for the man, said witness Stephanie Ortiz, 21. She said she asked an officer what had happened and was told, "You don't want to know. Something really bad.''

Despite a vigorous search, the man was still at large early Friday, police said.

Officers were questioning him about the death of Darnell Angevine, 25, of Amityville, who was fatally shot in the chest during a July 28 dispute on a Queens street.

Cabbies Turning Up Strike Talk Over Technology

Taxi drivers who oppose having global positioning systems in their cabs have set a strike date. The New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which has more than 8,400 members, will call for drivers to strike on September 5th and 6th if city leaders don't drop plans for a GPS system that the group fears could be used to track drivers' movements.

All 13,000 city cabs will be required by the Taxi and Limousine Commission to install touch-screen and global positioning systems. The commission initially called for the technology while approving a 26 percent fare increase in 2004. Starting on October 1, as taxis come up for inspection, they will be required to have the technology.

The touch-screen monitors will let passengers pay by credit card, check on news stories, map their taxi's current location and look up restaurant and entertainment information.

The Taxi Workers Alliance opposes the GPS system -- saying it is an invasion of drivers' privacy.

New York Yankees Slugger A-Rod Gets Key to City for 500th Homer

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez was presented on Thursday with a key to the city in honor of his 500th home run.

A-Rod, who just turned 32, hit the milestone homer against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 4, becoming the 22nd and youngest player to reach the mark.

He received a key to the city from Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Yankee Stadium before a game against the Detroit Tigers while his teammates and manager, Joe Torre, looked on.

"It will be something I hold dear to me for the rest of my life,'' Rodriguez said.

The Yankees paid tribute to A-Rod on Monday before their game against the Baltimore Orioles, presenting him with home plate, a silver tray with an inscription from team owner George Steinbrenner, two portraits and a sculpture.

Keys to the city are presented to distinguished people for outstanding civic contributions. Last week, the mayor presented a key to New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine in honor of his 300th career win.

Don Imus back ?.....ho,ho,ho

CBS and Imus Settle Differences Over His Firing

The voice of Don Imus could resurface somewhere on the radio dial as soon as this fall, after he and CBS announced yesterday that they had settled the remaining differences surrounding his firing in April over remarks deemed insensitive to women and blacks.

Neither Martin Garbus, the lawyer representing the radio host, nor CBS, which owns WFAN, the AM station that had been the flagship for his morning talk show, would comment on the terms of their agreement, citing a confidentiality clause. Had he not been dismissed, Mr. Imus would have been paid nearly $40 million over the nearly four years that remained on his contract. While some Imus associates suggested yesterday that his final payment was at least $20 million, Karen Mateo, a spokeswoman for CBS Radio, characterized that figure as too high.

In fact, it was impossible for an outsider to know for sure yesterday how much CBS had agreed to pay him. It was also unclear yesterday where on the radio Mr. Imus might be heard next. Two people who had been apprised directly of his plans, but who would only speak on condition of anonymity, said he had yet to line up a deal elsewhere. But his agreement with CBS does not, apparently, set any restrictions on how long he must wait before restarting his morning show elsewhere. (It does, however, preclude his making disparaging remarks about Leslie Moonves, the president and chief executive of CBS, and vice versa.)

Poor Rizzuto "The Scootor" ALL OF NY will miss ya'

Yankees legend Phil (Scooter) Rizzuto, a baseball Hall of Famer who became a beloved broadcaster best known for his catch phrase "Holy cow!" died late Monday at the age of 89.
Though a former MVP and a member of seven World Series-winning teams, Rizzuto was remembered most yesterday for his quirky broadcasting style and a heart that seemed too big for his diminutive 5-foot-6 frame.
"Phil was a gem, one of the great people I ever knew," said former teammate Yogi Berra, who played bingo with Rizzuto every week during the shortstop's final months.
"He was a dear friend and a great teammate, and he was a heck of a player, too," Berra said. "When I first came up to the Yankees he was like a big - actually, small - brother to me."

Feds Backing Bloomberg's Traffic Fee Plan

Mayor Bloomberg's plan to charge drivers $8 to drive below 86th Street in Manhattan has taken a big step forward. Washington has agreed to give New York City hundreds of millions of dollars for the congestion pricing plan.

If implemented, the congestion pricing scheme proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg would be the first of its kind in the nation. London and Singapore have similar toll programs.

For weeks, New York officials haggled over whether to approve the mayor's idea in time to qualify for a share of $1.2 billion in federal aid. State leaders eventually struck a compromise keeping the plan alive, but it was unclear if the squabbles and delays soured federal transportation authorities on New York's novel attempt to reduce gridlock.

Bloomberg's plan would charge cars $8 and trucks $21 to enter Manhattan south of 86th Street on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has been considering which five out of nine cities will receive a major infusion of cash for local traffic reduction plans, and Secretary Mary Peters was scheduled to make an announcement Tuesday morning.

YANKEES FANS KEY TO A-ROD’S DECISION

JOE Torre was asked yesterday if he thinks Alex Rodriguez has won over Yankee fans.
“I think so,” Torre said at his Safe At Home Foundation Golf Classic. “Yankee fans like to see explosiveness. They’re used to having big boppers.” Now he imagined A-Rod bopping until the age of 40, probably past Barry Bonds, and said: “God only knows where he’s gonna wind up.”
Torre may as well have been referring to A-Rod’s future home. Because the $30 Million Question hanging high over The Bronx is this one:
Have Yankee fans won over Alex Rodriguez?

Taxi Drivers' Group Upset Over New Technology

NEW YORK -- A major New York City taxi drivers' group says it might strike over new technology that's being required in all the city's cabs.

The executive director of the Taxi Workers Alliance says the group may call for a strike in September -- if city leaders don't address drivers' concerns about their privacy and income. The group has more than 7,000 members.

The city Taxi and Limousine Commission is requiring all 13,000 city cabs to install touch-screen monitor and mapping systems. Taxis must have the systems when they come up for routine inspections, beginning October 1.

The technology allows riders to pay by credit card, check on news, map out where a cab is going and find information about eateries and entertainment.

Many drivers say the systems are expensive and would let officials check up on them. Taxi officials say the new technology could boost ridership by eliminating the need for cash, while giving drivers information about traffic and lost items.

The commission originally called for the technology while approving a 26-percent fare increase in 2004.

A-ROD'S SPENDIND HIS A-WAD...

Maybe we can call him "Stay-Rod" now.
Yankee superstar Alex Rodriguez is eyeing a stunning new $25 million estate in Greenwich, Conn. - strongly suggesting he plans on remaining with the Bronx Bombers beyond this season, The Post has learned.
The Lake Carrington Estate is a sprawling 9-acre lakefront property dominated by a Georgian-style stone mansion spanning 35,000 square feet.
Inside are seven bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, nine fire places, a 45-foot-long indoor lap pool, a basketball court, a 20,000-bottle wine cellar and a 20-seat home theater. Outside are three other buildings, including a fishing and ice-skating hut.
And it would cost Rodriguez, who now lives on Park Avenue, an extra $5 million to finish the mansion's interior, which for now is just framed out.
Rodriguez's interest in the property comes as the Yankees have indicated they want to negotiate a new contract to avoid letting A-Rod become a free agent in November, when he can exercise an opt-out clause on the remaining three years of his existing contract.
A new contract could keep the all-star third baseman in pinstripes for the remainder of his career - and pay him more than $30 million annually.

OFFICER LOSES GALLANT FIGHT

DIES FIVE DAYS AFTER BEING HIT IN WILD SHOOTOUT

July 15, 2007 -- Officer Russel Timoshenko, who was shot in the face Monday while confronting a trio of vicious thugs in Brooklyn, ended his brave battle for life yesterday afternoon.
"Officer Timoshenko made the ultimate sacrifice with unflinching bravery and dedication to duty," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said outside Kings County Hospital last night.
His doctor, Robert Kurtz, struggled to hold back tears as he told reporters that the NYPD lawman died while on life support at 4:14 p.m.
In the dramatic final moment of Timoshenko's life, a line of nearly 150 fellow officers filed past him to pay their respects. His devastated family huddled near by.
Friends outside the hospital room could hear his heartbroken mother muttering "god help, god help" between her gut-wrenching sobs.
"People were kissing his hands and his feet," said George Kallaur, an archpriest at the Russian Orthodox Church of the New Martyrs and the Confessors of Russia in Bensonhurst.

Third Shooting Suspect Captured in Pennsylvania

A third suspect in the wounding of two New York Police Department officers has been captured in Pennsylvania, authorities said Thursday.

The New York Police Department and Pennsylvania state police confirmed that Robert J. Ellis (pictured right) was captured in Tannersville, Pa., near the place where another suspect was apprehended on Wednesday.

A bloodhound picked up Ellis' scent. He saw police and initially tried to run, but did not resist when he was captured by two troopers, said Pennsylvania State Police Capt. James Murtin.

Jersey Beauty Queen Pushes Back after Blackmail Attempt

Miss New Jersey says someone is threatening to make some personal photographs of her public if she does not give up her crown.

But Amy Polumbo is not just Miss New Jersey, she's also a Jersey girl, and says she has no intention of giving in.

"It would certainly be easier for me to simply succumb to these unlawful and immoral threats, and quietly disappear,'' Polumbo said Thursday at a news conference she called in Asbury Park.

Polumbo, a 22-year-old Howell resident and a senior at Wagner College on Staten Island, won the Miss New Jersey competition last month, giving her the right to compete in the next Miss America competition -- wherever and whenever it may be held. Her platform: Protecting children from online predators.

Polumbo's lawyer, Anthony Caruso, said that starting last week, Polumbo, her family and officials in the Miss New Jersey Education Foundation received packages with pictures of her and the demand that she resign by Friday.

Caruso said the pictures show her with some friends and some may have been photos that she posted years ago on a private Internet site.

Gave Up Sleep, but at Least I Have an iPhone

Apple wanted a spectacle when the iPhone went on sale, and it got just that.

Talking Business: iPhone Spin Goes Round and Round (June 30, 2007)

Dozens of photographers hovered outside Apple’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue near East 59th Street, waiting to snap pictures of the elated, often sunburned faces of the first iPhone owners. Some Apple faithful had waited in line for days.

At 6 p.m., their patience paid off.

“I guess I didn’t need to get in line because they have thousands of them in there,” said Norbert Pauli, 52, who had waited since Wednesday morning outside the Fifth Avenue store. The sweaty tangle of people who lined up there included a customer service representative for a trucking company who took a vacation day to make her first Apple purchase; a jazz musician who declared, “I don’t stand in line for anything”; and a tourist from Argentina who said he wasn’t even sure the phone would work once he got it home.

At Apple stores across the country yesterday, there were the so-called iCultists, the Internet entrepreneurs and technology consultants who would have surprised you if they said they didn’t wait in line all night.

Bloomberg Traffic Congestion Plan Stalled

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's congestion pricing traffic plan for Manhattan has hit a roadblock in Albany.

State lawmakers failed to approve the plan that would include an $8 toll to enter Manhattan below 86th Street between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays.

The legislature is adjourning for now, but it could be called back to Albany later this summer.
Thank God , how are they every going to enforce this toll ? It seems to me that it can't happen , WHAT DO YOU THINK ?

How Big Will the iPhone Be?

The new must-have smartphone may be a $10 billion business—and could send Apple shares even higher

Few stocks trade on emotion the way Apple Inc. does. Its rip-roaring initial public offering in 1980 created the template for modern tech mania, while making Steve Jobs a gazillionaire. When the company fell on hard times in the mid-1990s, no amount of good news could pierce the cloud of doom hanging over investors. Now, with the launch of the hugely hyped iPhone in a few weeks, momentum investors are driving Apple (AAPL) shares to unexplored territory. The stock has doubled in the past year, to 122. Apple's market cap recently topped $100 billion for the first time.

Hard as it is to believe, all the excitement surrounding Jobs and his new toy may actually understate the impact of this device on Apple's fortunes. Beyond the hysteria surrounding its June 29 launch, the iPhone has the potential for adding a totally new, $10 billion-a-year business within just a few years. If Apple can expand so-called smartphones from a luxury carried by corporate road warriors into an everyday tool for the masses—combining the functions of a BlackBerry and an iPod—Apple could soon see a new growth tear.

NYPD taking bikes in NYC....

The NYPD was a little bike happy last Wednesday, May 30th. According to witnesses, they showed up without warning and used circular saws to cut the locks off of about 50 bicycles on 6th street between 1st and 2nd Avenue. The NYPD allowed people to take the loose bikes without showing any proof of ownership. They seized 15 bikes (including bikes locked to D.O.T. bike racks) and arrested two bystanders.

According to Time’s Up!, Robert Carnevale was arrested while videotaping the bike raid after he asked one of the officers for his badge number. Carole Vale, a nurse observing the scene, was also arrested when she asked why Mr. Carnevale was being detained. Mr. Carnevale was held for 22 hours and Ms. Vale was held for 13 hours. Time's Up!, along with the 6th Street cycling community are asking for a meeting with the commanding officer of the Ninth Precinct to explain the actions of the NYPD and to ask for their bikes back.

Reader Paul told us that his neighbor's bike was taken, in spite of her pleas that "she had an order from a judge labeling this practice as illegal" from a prior incident. Paul also gave us the verbiage of the 9th Precinct's bike program: "The 9th Precinct program recognizes the chronic bike rack shortage, allowing people to park their bikes at City-owned street fixtures and seeking only to remove bikes that are clearly abandoned, blocking the sidewalk or locked to a tree." (More about the 9th Precinct's bike program here.)

Executive Director of Time’s Up!, Bill DiPaola says, “Bikes should not be seized unless they are impeding the flow of traffic. This is a normal maintenance procedure that got way out of control.” He adds, “As seen last week, the police are not experienced with these types of procedures. This is a job for sanitation or for the local community, not the NYPD.”

Some Ticket Scalping Rules Are Changing

NEW YORK -- For decades, ticket scalping was a thing done in the shadows, but those days of ducking into alleyways and dodging police are fading fast.

New York is poised this week to become the latest in a string of states to ease or eliminate decades-old restrictions on the resale of tickets to sporting events, concerts and shows.

Under the proposed rules, the state would discard its long practice of capping prices for tickets sold on the secondary market.

Some old regulations would stay in place. Scalpers would still be banned from selling tickets within 1,500 feet of large arenas like Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium. Smaller venues would get a similar 500-foot buffer zone. Brokers who sell large numbers of tickets would still need to get a license.

But the change would, for the first time, make it entirely legal for average fans to scalp their seats on the Internet.

For better or worse, it would also allow anyone holding a hot ticket to a Mets playoff game or Broadway musical to sell them off for whatever buyers were willing to pay.

"If you have something to sell, you should be able to sell it for what it is truly worth,'' said Sean Pate, spokesman for the online ticket broker StubHub Inc., which lobbied hard for the change.

The state assembly voted for the bill Tuesday. The Senate is expected to follow suit, and Gov. Eliot Spitzer could sign the measure by Friday, when the state's old anti-scalping law expires.

New York is far from alone in its redrafting of scalping rules.

Minnesota tossed out its old anti-scalping laws this spring. The state previously allowed tickets to be resold only at face value.

A bill that would ease Missouri's ban on selling tickets to sporting events at more than face value passed the legislature and is now being considered by the governor.

A-ROD'S A YANKEE DOODLE RANDY

HITS A STRIP JOINT WITH TORONTO BABE

- Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez stepped up to the plate with a mysterious, busty blonde in Toronto, as these intimate, exclusive photos reveal.
The cozy duo dined with two pals at a pricey steakhouse late Sunday night, then headed to a glitzy strip club before making their way to his hotel, where the pair ducked into an elevator and headed upstairs just after midnight.
Cynthia Rodriguez - A-Rod's wife and mother of their 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Natasha - was nowhere to be seen during the slugger's big night out on the town, which occurred the evening before the last-place Bronx Bombers' pathetic 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.
And it came as Rodriguez took a room at Toronto's Four Seasons hotel - down the street from the Park Hyatt, where most, if not all of his Yankee teammates and coaches are staying during a three-game stint that ends tonight.

Manhattan Cab Robber Strikes Again?

NEW YORK -- The robber targeting taxis in Manhattan has struck again -- only hours after drivers' group and the Guardian Angels handed out fliers urging drivers to be on the lookout.

The latest holdup happened around 10:40 last night on West 39th Street near Seventh Avenue, in midtown. Police say the robber brandished a gun, took an undetermined amount of cash from the driver and ran off.

Investigators suspect he was the same man responsible for seven taxi robberies in the Chelsea, SoHo and Lower East Side neighborhoods since May 17.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers and the Guardian Angels crime-fighting group gave drivers copies of a police sketch of the suspect.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.

Apple's retail notebook sales up 94 percent in April

Mac maker Apple Inc. saw retail sales of Mac units grow a solid 62 percent year-over-year for the month of April, which included a 94 percent spike in notebook sales thanks to solid MacBook and MacBook Pro momentum, as well as increased distribution

According to NPD data cited by UBS Investment Research analyst Ben Reitzes on Wednesday, U.S. PC unit growth for the month of April grew 14 percent overall, include a 19 percent rise in retail sales and a 30 percent surge in notebook sales.

"Checks for Macs have been solid, backing our 25 percent unit growth estimate for [the company's fiscal third quarter] which should also see support from recently updated MacBooks," the analyst wrote in a one-page memo to clients.

Reitzes added that iPod sales were down 3 percent for the month of April, but noted the "difficult compare" to the year-ago period in which iPod unit sales were up 33 percent.

"While below the 19 percent (9.6 million units) we are modelling for [the] fiscal third quarter, [the NPD] data doesn’t include international sales which could help support growth," he wrote. "We also believe new products later in the year should drive future improvement."

Wife of Former New Jersey Governor Says She Never Knew He Was Gay

Posted: Tuesday, 01 May 2007 12:27PM

CHICAGO (AP) -- The estranged wife of the nation's first openly gay governor fired back at her husband during an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show,'' saying she never knew he was gay.

"He kind of gave me the news in cowardly installments,'' said Dina Matos McGreevey, who is in the process of divorcing former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey.

The former governor told the world in August 2004 he was "a gay American'' and had an extramarital affair with a male aide. He resigned months later.

"I felt like my world had crumbled and my life was over,'' Matos McGreevey said. "In the course of the three days of his explanation and confession to me, it was clear to me that he never loved me.''

Oprah Winfrey interviewed Matos McGreevey in a show that aired Tuesday, the same day "Silent Partner: A Memoir of My Marriage,'' was published by Hyperion Books.

"No one ever said to me that he was gay,'' she said. "It's a cliche that the wife is always the last to know, and it's true.''

'Spider-Man 3' premieres at Tribeca

'Spider-Man 3' premieres at Tribeca

Event held in Astoria, New York

Sometimes, the venue is so unorthodox, the concept so ambitious, the movie itself such a draw that the night becomes one of those you-had-to-be-there spectacles.

Monday night's U.S. preem of "Spider-Man 3" for a crowd 3,000 strong joined that short list, though not in quite the same way as other mega-events in New York -- "X-Men" on Ellis Island, "Godzilla" at Madison Square Park or "King Kong" in Times Square. Those were established settings compared with the unlikely one for this bash: a 14-screen Regal multiplex in Astoria, Queens, roughly the East Coast equivalent of Van Nuys.

Why Astoria, land of car dealerships and Archie Bunker? Two main reasons: It's the hometown of Spidey alter-ego Peter Parker, and the Tribeca Film Festival's endless quest to bring movies to the masses.

After a parade of stars, marching bands and balloons wound its way to the theater, a line of several hundred people started wrapping around the complex as the 7:30 start time came and went. They were separated by metal police barricades from the neighborhood's modest homes, used furniture stores and auto body shops. Staff from Sony was around the corner and mostly inside the front doors. Out on the street, it wasn't at all clear whether the line would be moving.

Would some of the 14 screens start the movie? Would they reach capacity? No one outside had any information. "I dunno, do we have room for a couple theaters more in there?" one of the lone headsetted staffers asked someone inside. Suddenly, it was Blackberries at 10 paces. "Hi, is she in?" impatient attendees asked, phoning offices of people who might know people who could allow a VIP to cut this DMV-like line. Guests huddled to see if a wiser move would be to cut bait and go have dinner. The limo was warming up around the corner. Which way to Manhattan again? The time was 7:55.

The line miraculously moved. "If you have actual tickets, enter this way!" one staffer announced periodically. All but a few people kept shuffling along, gritting whitened teeth. The doors were finally in sight, across from a modest set of bleachers occupied by a few dozen hardy stargazers.

Inside, it was barely controlled chaos. Concession stands quickly ran out of supplies. "Everybody take your seats, please, the movie is about to start!" one employee called out, sounding like that rube in "Animal House" crying out "All is well!" The time was 8:15.

Finally, the lights went down. It was 8:30, an hour late. When the expensive, shimmering summer popcorn action had let up, it was time for the crowd to head down the block, to another line, past chain stores and a school bearing the proud sign "this is a drug-free school zone!" for the vibrant, red-bedecked after-party at the fabled Kaufman-Astoria Studios.

Once curiosity and appetite were sated, the final quest: finding the way back across the East River past midnight. The security personnel were not completely sure of directions to the subway. "Maybe follow those people?" one suggested. "I think it's 34th," another offered. "No, 31st. No, 33rd." Right on cue, a taxi appeared.

Miss America Won't Testify in L.I. Sting Casesutor:

Posted: Tuesday, 01 May 2007 12:01PM

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) -- An undercover sex sting on Long Island starring Miss America may have bombed after the beauty queen told prosecutors that she would not return to testify.

Lauren Nelson, of Lawton, Okla., worked with police in Suffolk County to target would-be Internet sexual predators, taped for an episode of the television show "America's Most Wanted.'' She posed as a teenager and lured men into chatting online and meeting her at a Bay Shore home, where police and crews were waiting. Eleven men were arrested in the sting.

But one or all of the cases against the men could be in jeopardy after Nelson told prosecutors she did not plan on returning to Long Island to testify, said Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota in Newsday's Tuesday edition.
